The Contact Forester will audit work of REC’s vegetation management contractors to ensure contractual compliance and minimize tree caused outages. The Contact Forester reports information and data to the Director of Vegetation Management Services, Foresters, and the contract crew foreman to ensure vegetation management work is completed in accordance with the Cooperative’s Right-of-Way Work Specifications.
Role and Responsibilities
- Audit line clearance crews’ work to see that it complies with specifications.
- Identify and communicate live and dead hazard trees prior to crew starting work.
- Identify skips and communicate to line clearance crew and Forester.
- Maintain a weekly record of rights of way cleared by each crew.
- Assist crews with property owner notification and permission for tree removals.
- Evaluate member requests for tree trimming or removal.
- Investigate property owner complaints related to the vegetation management program.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
An Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry or Arboriculture or an Associate of Science Degree in Forestry or Arboriculture and two (2) years’ experience in directing vegetation management crews. In addition to education requirements, must have five (5) years’ experience in progressively related responsibilities. Certification for herbicide use will be required.
Candidate must understand proper tree pruning, safety and best management practices, including ANSI300, ANSIZ133.1, OSHA 1910.269 and OSHA1910.331. Must know REC safety rules and work in accordance with these rules and accept responsibility for the safety of those who work under their supervision. Must be able to read and use maps and electronic mapping systems. Must be familiar with REC’s Work Order procedures and be able to interpret construction drawings. Must have a working knowledge of REC’s computer system and digital map system.
Must be able to communicate well - with internal and external customers and demonstrate outstanding customer service. Must be able to handle multiple responsibilities and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Must be able to clearly write reports, letters and other information and meet deadlines. Must be proficient in use of two-way radio and mobile phone equipment, including texts, email and voicemail. Must have a valid Virginia driver's license. Must be proficient in patrol of rights of way and accurately report findings and communicate findings as required, both verbally and in writing. Must possess computer skills, to include a working: Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint and Apple systems, as required by job responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.
Most of work schedule will be in the field and Contact Forester must be willing and able to work in all weather and site conditions including high grass, brush, mud, dirt, snow, ice and fallen trees. Must be willing to work weekends and after-hours in order to accommodate members’ and others’ requests for meetings and restoration activities. Must be willing to participate in training, either in-house or through selected agencies, to help fulfill job requirements.
