Josh Beaver officially stepped into the role of UAA President in September during the record-breaking Trees & Utilities Conference. We sat down with him to discuss the high-energy start to his term, his vision for the future, and how the UAA plans to be the crucial voice of the Utility Vegetation Management (UVM) industry.

A Record-Breaking Start at Trees & Utilities

As UAA President Josh Beaver reflected on the Trees & Utilities Conference in Knoxville, he aptly described his first month as being at “hyper speed.” “I can assure you I’ve been very busy since stepping into this new role,” he shared.

“T&U was a fantastic event with lots of great sessions. I was a bit surprised that we broke the attendance record due to the location, but it shows the level of passion in the industry. The conference just keeps getting better. Members look forward to and will show up for this event every year.”

Beaver also highlighted the importance of strengthening external relationships, noting the presence of ISA and UCFS at the conference, the NUCFAC open house session, and celebrating the first-time involvement of students from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, who attended to learn more about UVM.

“I also want to commend UAA staff, (Dennis Fallon, Samantha Wilson, Crystal Arp, and Cody Woodward), for the passion and focus they bring to Trees & Utilities and all our events. The team is hyper-focused and enthusiastic about member engagement, uncovering new ways of approaching things to keep them connected.”

Voice of the UVM Industry

Beaver says UAA’s vision is clear: to be the definitive voice of the UVM industry.

“This goal took shape at the UAA Board meeting and strategic planning session in May,” he explained. “Members all play a critical role in public safety and ensuring reliable power and being stewards of the environment. Our goal is to work with regulators and the public and be the source of member education and training.”

He also points to the UAA’s continued commitment to quality. “You can’t beat the volunteer committees we have. They play a critical role and bring expertise on the subject matter we’re trying to get out to the masses. You can always count on the UAA to deliver the high-quality training and resources.”

Specific Goals for His Term

  • Strengthening Partnerships – He is committed to growing relationships with organizations like the ISA, UCFS, the Arbor Day Foundation, and TCIA. Beaver adds that discussions are also underway to establish or reestablish communication with groups like the American Petroleum Institute, the Railroad Industry, and the Edison Electrical Institute (EEI).
  • Sound Financial Future – To support the organization’s growth, Beaver says the UAA is committed to a sound financial future. This will include adding a staff member with a strong financial background in the next year.
  • Member Experience – For Beaver, a significant focus is on customer satisfaction.

“I want to be a champion for the members and the companies with great memberships. It’s imperative they have a satisfying experience,” he emphasized.

Opportunities Ahead

As President, he views the rapidly shifting industry, with its focus on innovative technology, environmental directions, and climactic challenges, as opportunities

“We need to continue to stay ahead of the tech and environmental changes by providing the resources our members need,” he said. He also stressed a continued focus on diversity and inclusion within the membership. This includes developing the next generation of leaders by visiting schools and universities, noting the initial success with college students at T&U this year, and strengthening the new mentorship program.

“The key to capitalizing on the UAA’s achievements and executing the strategic plan boils down to communication, providing support and guidance to the Board, volunteers, and staff.

“I’m excited about my term as president. I encourage all UAA members to stay involved and engaged to boost the success of our association. Join me! We’re always looking for great people to get involved.”
