In the world of utility vegetation management, there are those who master the craft, and those who transform it for the next generation. Larry Abernathy, the recipient of the 2025 UAA Education Award, fits both categories.

Larry Abernathy’s journey is an industry success story.

He launched his career nearly 50 years ago with The Davey Tree Expert Company. Through decades of hard work and determination, he climbed every rung of the ladder—from Vegetation Control Foreman to Vice President and General Manager of West Coast operations.

As an ISA Certified Arborist/Utility Specialist and a Certified TreeCare Safety Professional (CTSP), Larry didn’t just witness the evolution of UVM; he helped drive it. But it was his “retirement” in 2019 that sparked his most significant contribution to the industry’s future.

When the UAA and Butte College sought to develop a specialized training program, Larry volunteered his time and years of expertise. What was initially intended as a short-term commitment evolved into a multi-year labor of love.

Larry became a driving force behind the Utility Line-Clearance Arborist and Forestry Technician training programs. Partnering with Butte College, PG&E, and SMUD, he helped create a rigorous 200-hour curriculum designed to solve the industry’s talent gap.

“We created a five-week training course that would give someone off the street the knowledge and skills that they would learn in their first six months on the job,” Larry shared during an appearance on the Trees & Lines podcast.

This program allows new recruits to jumpstart their careers with a foundation of safety and technical proficiency that previously took months or years to acquire.

UAA’s Education Award is reserved for those who have made a substantial contribution to the development and dissemination of UVM knowledge. Phil Charlton, former UAA Executive Director, notes, “Larry’s leadership was instrumental in recruiting the industry experts needed to deliver high-quality, community-college-based programs that support the entire California utility landscape.”

Larry’s influence now extends beyond the classroom through his firm, Abernathy VM Services, LLC, where he continues to consult and advise on operations and management.

The UAA has previously honored Larry with the Lifetime Achievement and Utility Arborist Awards, but the Education Award highlights a different side of his legacy: his selflessness. He has taken a lifetime of “lessons learned” and turned them into a roadmap for the next generation of line-clearance arborists.

In an industry where safety and reliability are paramount, Larry Abernathy has ensured that the “experts of tomorrow” are getting the best possible start today.
