Les Day is a leader driven by technical excellence.

For more than thirteen years, Les has been a driving force in workplace safety. A Business Development & Safety Consultant at ZMOG Management Company LLC, Les’s career is marked by a unique ability to manage large-scale operations, at one point overseeing safety programs for more than 1,600 employees and 300 subcontractors, while simultaneously diving into the technicalities of national safety standards.

Exemplifying the Spirit of the Silver Shield

The Silver Shield Award carries a profound legacy. Created in 2016 through the vision of the late Will Nutter, the award was renamed in his honor in 2021 to commemorate his life as a tireless advocate for industry-wide safety collaboration.

Tim Walsh nominated Les for the honor, highlighting his instrumental role on the ANSI Z133 Committee. When the committee faced the daunting task of revising the Electrical Hazard section, (one of the most complex and challenging parts of the consensus standard), Les stepped in mid-cycle to lead Task Group 4.

“Les demonstrated outstanding safety leadership when it was needed most,” says Tim Walsh. “By stepping into a critical role mid-revision, he provided the clarity and structure necessary to turn a complex, technical subject into a logical and practical roadmap for safety. His ability to translate those requirements into guidance that a worker in the field can actually use is what makes him an indispensable leader.”

An Advocate for the Front Line

Beyond his committee work, Les is passionate about the ANSI Z133 standard and promotes its importance through conferences and industry discussions. His background in forestry and hands-on vegetation management allows him to speak with a level of authority that resonates with both executives and field crews.

“What sets Les apart is that his leadership is marked by conviction and care,” Walsh adds. “He doesn’t just advocate for rules; he influences the culture of every organization he touches. His dedication to advancing safety exemplifies the exact spirit Will Nutter intended for this award.”

A Legacy of Professionalism

A highly credentialed professional, Les holds multiple certifications, including ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Utility Arborist, and TCIA Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP). From his time building comprehensive safety programs at Mountain F. Enterprises to his current leadership on the UAA Safety Committee, his influence continues to help organizations create safer work environments.

By honoring Les Day, we recognize a leader whose voice consistently sharpens the industry’s focus to ensure that safety remains the center of every decision made in the field.

Next month, we profile Wes Tregilgas, who was named a co-winner of the 2025 Will Nutter Silver Shield.
