Across the utility vegetation management industry, safety is not a competitive advantage—it’s a shared responsibility. Every crew member deserves to go home safely, regardless of logo, contract, or territory. The question facing many organizations today isn’t whether safety matters but how to meaningfully move the needle.

At Tree Service Kings, we took a hard look inward. Like many contractors, we had policies in place—but we recognized gaps between intent, behavior, and outcomes. That realization sparked a shift: we reframed safety as a living system, not a department. Our safety division was restructured and renamed SEEDSafety, Education, and Employee Development—to reinforce that safety grows through investment, consistency, and culture.

Three pillars guided our progress: telematics, training, and accountability-driven culture.

Telematics gave us visibility. By leveraging real-time fleet data through our partnership with Motive (an AI-powered fleet safety platform), we were able to identify trends in speeding, distraction, tailgating, and compliance—then address them proactively through coaching rather than punishment. Training followed data, not assumptions. And culture tied it together, reinforcing that safety conversations are ongoing, transparent, and shared across all levels of the organization.

The results were measurable: a 48% reduction in overall safety events, 76% decrease in cell phone usage, 82% reduction in miles spent speeding, and significant improvements in stop sign compliance and tailgating behavior. More importantly, those numbers represent fewer close calls and safer outcomes for people.

Our takeaway is simple: progress happens faster when we share what works. Whether through telematics, peer learning, or redefining how safety is communicated internally, collaboration—not isolation—is how we collectively move the industry forward. If we learn together, we protect more lives.
