Wes Tregilgas is a pillar of reliability and innovation within the utility industry. He is known for turning his years of diverse field experience into a leadership style that prioritizes the most crucial human element of the job: safety. It is why he is the winner of the 2025 Will Nutter Silver Shield Award.

A Career Rooted in Experience

Wes’s leadership is built on decades of hands-on experience across every sector of arboriculture. An ISA Certified Arborist and Utility Specialist, Wes spent ten years running his own commercial firm before moving into safety roles at Asplundh and managing vegetation for major investor-owned utilities. This “360-degree” perspective—spanning ownership, field safety, and utility management—provided him with a unique vantage point when he joined Wright Tree Service in 2017.

Now serving as Senior Safety Manager, Wes leads the Safety, Education, and Training (SET) department. Under his guidance, the team has expanded to include specialized regional leads and division supervisors. He also maintains the company’s safety manual, integrating industry best practices with rigorous internal procedures to ensure every worker returns home safely.

Leading by Example

What sets Wes apart is not just his technical knowledge, but his relentless drive to improve the status quo. He is widely admired for his ability to combine persistence with creativity, pushing for solutions that strengthen operations while simultaneously enhancing work experience for his teams.

Nick Fox, Senior Vice President of Operations at Wright Tree Service, nominated Wes for the award.

“Wes displays unwavering commitment to his team, his company, and to our industry,” Nick says. “He is always pushing forward and striving to be better. His focus and determination have won him the trust and admiration of his peers and colleagues.”

Nick maintains that Wes serves as a catalyst for evolution. He brings energy and determination that lifts the people and programs around him, treating safety not as a static goal, but as a continuous journey.

“Wes leads by example and aims for improvement or enhancement at every turn,” Nick adds. “Safety is at the core of his thinking, and it influences every decision he makes.”

Beyond the Daily Grind: A Commitment to the Industry

Wes Tregilgas embodies the hallmark of a Silver Shield winner: an influence that extends far beyond his primary job description. As a selfless professional, he consistently lends his time and expertise to the UAA and the broader industry, whether serving on organizational boards or chairing events like the Michigan Tree Climbing Championship.

His contributions go beyond theory, providing the practical, behind-the-scenes support that ensures educational opportunities are both successful and safe. Wes’s colleagues frequently remark on his tireless work ethic and his refusal to settle for the status quo. “Wes has earned his reputation as a passionate, selfless professional. He never stops or says ‘no’—he keeps researching and working to deliver useful, innovative experiences,” says Fox. Through this dedication, Wes ensures that safety remains engaging, accessible, and an enduring priority for the entire profession.

A Journey of Innovation and Trust

Wes’s career highlights the critical link between safety and public trust. By earning awards for both customer service and innovation, he has proven that a safe, professional job site is the foundation of a positive community experience.

Within Wright Tree Service, Wes has transformed safety from a set of rules into a mutual pact among colleagues. His ability to bridge the gap between field crews and management stems from his unique blend of field-proven credibility and a forward-thinking mindset. As a recipient of the Will Nutter Silver Shield Award, Wes embodies the persistence and character required to lead in a high-risk industry, strengthening the safety culture for both his company and the broader UAA community.
