Honoring Rich Hendler, an IVM Specialist at ACRT, with a Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a career devoted to strengthening the utility vegetation management (UVM) industry through pioneering work, leadership, and generous mentorship.

This annual award celebrates professionals whose impact has been felt over decades, and Hendler’s career is the definition of this standard.

“Rich Hendler has left an indelible mark on the Utility Arborist Association (UAA) and the utility vegetation management industry as a whole,” says Renee Bissett, his nominator and Senior Manager of Strategic Campaigns at Davey Tree Expert Company. “He is certified in various aspects of arboriculture and vegetation management, so his commitment to excellence continues as he enriches utilities across the nation with his extensive knowledge and leadership.”

Long before it became standard practice, Hendler championed Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM). During his decades at Dow Chemical Company, he specialized in IVM for utility rights-of-way (ROW) and was instrumental in moving best practices from theoretical concepts into widely adopted standards that improved both system reliability and environmental stewardship.

Hendler is a Subject Matter Expert in Vegetation Control Herbicides and Applications, leveraging his academic background—a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Tulane University and a Master of Science in Agronomy and Crop Science from Texas A&M University—to assist land managers in pursuing Best Practices.

“I am passionate about sharing my experience and expertise those who are looking to make a difference for our current environment,” Hendler says.

Hendler is champion of leadership and mentorship, serving in roles that strengthen industry organizations and develop future leaders. He is a former UAA President, the new president of the Texas Vegetation Management Association (VMA), past presidents of VMA in Oklahoma and Louisiana. He also created meetings for the Southwest Utility Managers (SWUM) meetings, establishing a vital forum for utility leaders.

Mentorship has been a hallmark of his career. He is known for generously sharing his knowledge, guiding countless professionals, and helping raise the overall level of practice across the industry.

“Rich has mentored numerous UVM professionals, ensuring that those who follow in his footsteps are equipped with not only knowledge, but a commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement,” says Phil Swart, nominator and Regional Account Manager at ArborWorks. “An old Greek proverb states that “society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit,” in much the same way, the utility arborist profession has grown stronger having had Rich Hendler contribute to its betterment and lasting success.”
